Last Saturday, I went to the Humble, Texas It’s A Stitch, my Bernina dealer.
I couldn’t resist picking up a couple of Moda Charm Packs™ of Bonnie and Camille’s April Showers.
Although it includes some of my usual colors (gray, aqua, and red), it also adds green, butter yellow, and navy blue. I also loved the umbrellas and polka dots. But…what to do with it?
After searching the internet, I found a Moda Bake Shop recipe that looked interesting. I decided to modify it. First, I placed some of the charm pieces on my design wall without sashing.
I really like this, but I decided I wanted the quilt much bigger than what I could make with 84 squares of 5″each. So, I cut some coordinating fabric from my own stash (see the red with white polka dots, the solid blue and solid red?), and began to add sashing like the Moda Bakeshop recipe directs. I also decided to include a center square with some sort of embroidered saying in it.
To determine the size of my embroidered medallion, I put the basic shape and size (on point 4.5″ finished squares with 1.5″ finished sashing) into my EQ7 software, printed it, and used a highlighter to designate the embroidered part.
Now, I’ve started to piece the project. While piecing, I’ve been thinking about what I want in the embroidered medallion. Fortunately for me, I have a very crafty friend, Lynda, who brainstormed with me. I wanted something to go with the umbrella theme, and I wanted words. She told me one of her favorite sayings, and I knew immediately that it was perfect:
“Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s learning to dance in the rain.”
I’m considering some decorative stitching all along the sashing, too, but that might be too much.
